Why mass fraction dominates rocket design
Propellant mass fraction, the proportion of a rocket's total mass that is fuel and oxidizer, directly determines achievable delta-v through the rocket equation. Getting this number as high as possible while still leaving room for structure and payload is one of the central challenges of launch vehicle design.
Worked example
For a rocket with 90,000 kg of propellant out of 100,000 kg total mass:
Mass Fraction = 90000 / 100000 = 90.0%
Orbital launch vehicles typically need propellant mass fractions above 90%, leaving only about 10% for structure, engines, and payload combined - this extreme requirement is why every kilogram of structural weight matters so much in rocket design, and why lightweight materials command a premium in the aerospace industry.
