The Formula
The base distance comes from the aircraft's performance charts for the current weight, density altitude, and wind. The safety factor is a multiplier — commonly in the 1.5× to 1.67× range depending on the applicable operating rules and aircraft category — applied on top of that unfactored figure to arrive at the runway length that should actually be required before committing to a takeoff or planning a landing.

- Airport suitability — before flying into or out of an unfamiliar field, comparing required runway length against published runway length is a basic go/no-go check.
- Regulatory dispatch planning — commercial operations are typically required to apply a specific safety factor as part of dispatch, not just book performance.
