Cut and Fill Earthwork Volume Calculator

The standard way to estimate grading volumes

Rather than trying to calculate an exact 3D volume, the Average End Area method estimates earthwork volume between two surveyed cross-sections by averaging their areas and multiplying by the distance between them - a practical, widely used approximation.

Worked example

For cross-sectional areas of 20 m² and 30 m² at stations 30 meters apart:

Volume = ((20 + 30) / 2) x 30 = 750.0 m3

This method is repeated station by station along an entire road or site grading project, summing the individual segment volumes to arrive at total cut and fill quantities for the whole job.
