A Sheet of Drywall Covers Less Than You Think
A standard 4 ft × 8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft, which sounds like a lot until you're hanging a 12 ft × 14 ft room with 8 ft ceilings — four walls of that room alone come to 416 sq ft, more than 13 sheets before you even touch the ceiling or account for a single cut.
The Formula
Wall area can be entered directly, or built from wall length times wall height if you don't already have a total. The calculator applies a waste allowance — 10% by default — to cover cuts around outlets, corners, and door and window framing, then divides by the standard sheet area of 32 sq ft (a 4 ft × 8 ft sheet) and rounds up, since a fraction of a sheet still means buying a whole one.
Where This Calculation Matters
- New construction walls — framing crews order drywall by the sheet, and running short mid-hang means a delivery delay that stalls the next trade in line.
- Ceilings — ceiling area is often calculated and ordered separately from walls, since ceiling sheets are more likely to be hung perpendicular to joists and cut differently.
- Basement and garage finishing — irregular room shapes around stairwells, posts, and mechanical chases tend to push the real waste percentage above the 10% default.
