Forex Position Size Calculator
Forex Position Size Calculator
Position sizing is the single most important risk-management decision a forex trader makes on every trade - more important than the entry signal itself. This calculator works backward from how much you're willing to lose to the exact lot size that keeps a stopped-out trade within that limit.
How It Works
The formula is straightforward:
Position Size (lots) = Account Risk Amount / (Stop Loss Pips x Pip Value Per Lot)
Worked Example
- Account risk amount: $500
- Stop loss distance: 50 pips
- Pip value per standard lot: $10
Position size = 500 / (50 x 10) = 1.0 standard lot
Why Risk-Based Sizing Matters
Many new traders size positions based on how much margin is available, not how much they can afford to lose. That approach means a single bad trade with a wide stop can wipe out a disproportionate share of the account. Professional risk management typically caps risk per trade at 1-2% of total account equity, with the stop loss distance determined by chart structure first, and the position size calculated afterward to fit that risk budget - never the other way around.
