Volume Is the Starting Point for Almost Every Other Rock Calculation

Before you can work out a specimen's density, estimate how much material a quarry face contains, or figure out the mass of a core sample, you need its volume. Rock and sediment samples rarely arrive in one convenient shape, so this calculator covers the three geometries that come up constantly in fieldwork and lab work: cubes, rectangular blocks, and cylindrical core samples.

The Formulas

Cube: Volume = Side³
Rectangular Block: Volume = Length × Width × Height
Cylinder: Volume = π × Radius² × Height

The cylinder formula is the one most directly useful in practice, since drilled core samples — from soil borings, rock cores, and ice cores alike — are cylindrical by nature of how they're extracted.

Where Each Shape Comes Up

  • Core sample analysis — drilled cores are cylinders almost by definition; volume feeds directly into calculating bulk density and porosity from a weighed sample.
  • Quarry and extraction estimates — a rectangular block approximation gives a quick first-pass volume estimate for a bench or extraction zone before more detailed surveying.
  • Lab specimen prep — cut cube samples are common in rock mechanics testing (compressive strength, permeability testing), where a known, regular volume simplifies later calculations.
  • Cross-checking density measurements — if you can measure a specimen's dimensions directly, volume by geometry serves as a check against volume by water displacement.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Choose a shape: Cube, Rectangular Block, or Cylinder Core Sample.
  2. For a cube, enter the Side Length.
  3. For a block, enter Length, Width, and Height.
  4. For a cylinder, enter Radius and Height / Core Length.
  5. Select Calculate to get the volume in cubic units, with the formula applied to your dimensions.
Note: Keep all dimensions in the same unit before entering them — the result will be in that unit cubed (e.g. all measurements in cm gives a result in cm³).
