Blood alcohol content can be estimated with a formula because the body processes alcohol in a remarkably predictable way — absorbing it, spreading it through body water, and breaking it down at a steady pace. The pharmacology behind that predictability, and the historic equation that captures it, explain both the estimate and its limits.

A Drug That Spreads in Water

Alcohol is absorbed from the stomach and intestine into the blood, then distributes throughout the body's water. Because it dissolves in water rather than fat, a person with more body water dilutes a given amount of alcohol more — which is why body size and composition strongly affect the resulting concentration. The same drink hits a smaller or leaner-in-water person harder.

The Widmark Equation

In the early twentieth century the scientist Erik Widmark developed an equation relating the amount of alcohol consumed, body weight, and a distribution factor to blood alcohol concentration. This Widmark formula remains the backbone of BAC estimation, encoding the insight that alcohol spreads through body water and that its concentration can be predicted from dose and body size.

What affects blood alcohol concentration

Body water / sizeMore dilution, lower peak

Breakdown at a Steady Pace

The liver metabolizes alcohol at a roughly constant rate, largely independent of how much is present — a distinctive feature that means the body clears alcohol on its own schedule, not faster because more was drunk. Coffee, cold showers, and other folk remedies do not speed it up. Only time lowers blood alcohol, at a pace the body sets.

Why Estimates Are Only Estimates

Real blood alcohol depends on many factors an equation cannot fully capture: individual metabolism, sex differences in body water, food in the stomach, drinking speed, medications, and more. A calculated BAC is an approximation for understanding, never a safe basis for deciding one is fit to drive. The only reliable rule is not to drink and drive at all.
