Rock Is Full of Holes
Solid-looking rock and sediment are riddled with void space — gaps between grains, cracks, and cavities. Porosity measures how much of the total volume is this emptiness rather than solid mineral. A sandstone can be nearly a third empty space; a dense crystalline rock almost none. This unseen porosity is where underground water, oil, and gas reside.
The Aquifer
An aquifer is a body of rock or sediment porous enough to store and yield useful water. Contrary to the popular image of underground rivers and lakes, most groundwater fills the microscopic pores of sand, gravel, or porous rock, saturating it below the water table. The world's wells and springs draw from these saturated, porous formations.

Storage Versus Yield
Porosity tells how much water a formation can store, but not how easily it gives it up — that depends on whether the pores connect. A clay can be very porous yet hold its water stubbornly in tiny, poorly linked pores. So porosity is only half the story of a good aquifer; the connectedness of the pores decides whether the stored water can actually flow to a well.
A Finite Reserve
Because groundwater accumulates slowly, filling pore space over long periods, aquifers can be depleted faster than they refill. Understanding porosity — how much water a formation truly holds — is central to managing this precious, finite reserve, on which countless communities and farms depend.
