This butchered the films: it discarded up to half the picture, destroyed carefully composed wide shots, and even fabricated camera movements the director never made by panning across a still frame. Two characters composed at opposite edges of a widescreen shot could not both be shown, so conversations were mangled. Film enthusiasts revile pan-and-scan as vandalism of the filmmakers' work, and its decline, as widescreen TVs and letterboxing became accepted, was a genuine victory for preserving films as intended. It is the clearest cautionary tale of why cropping to fit is so destructive.

Letterboxing as an Aesthetic Choice

Finally, letterboxing is sometimes added deliberately even when not required, because the wide, bar-framed look has become so associated with theatrical cinema that creators use it to evoke a "cinematic" feeling.
