In a high-pressure system, air descends, which suppresses cloud formation and brings clear, settled weather. Why Falling Pressure Means a Storm

Pressure Differences Make Wind

Pressure does more than forecast precipitation, it creates wind. Air flows from high pressure toward low pressure, trying to equalize, and the greater the pressure difference over a distance, the stronger that flow, that is wind. On a weather map, the lines connecting equal pressure, isobars, reveal this: closely spaced isobars mean a steep pressure gradient and strong winds, while widely spaced ones mean light winds. This is why forecasters read isobar spacing to predict wind, and why a deep, intense low-pressure system, with a large pressure difference around it, brings not just storms but powerful winds. Pressure gradients are, quite literally, what drives the wind.

The Altitude Correction and the Human Angle

Because raw pressure falls with elevation, weather maps use sea-level-adjusted pressure so that a mountain station and a coastal one can be compared, otherwise the mountain would always appear to be under a "low" purely from altitude, exactly the correction the calculator performs. On a personal note, many people report that they can feel falling pressure before a storm, aches in joints or sinuses, which, while individual, reflects the body responding to real pressure changes as weather systems move through.
