Weep Holes: The Gaps That Must Stay Open
Those small gaps left open in the mortar at the bottom course of a brick wall are weep holes, and they are essential, not sloppy workmanship. Homeowners sometimes seal these holes thinking they are defects, which traps water inside the wall and causes exactly the damage the system was designed to prevent. Efflorescence and Spalling

Efflorescence, the white powdery stain that sometimes appears on brick, is soluble salts carried to the surface by water moving through the masonry and left behind as it evaporates, evidence of water movement, usually cosmetic. Spalling, where the brick face flakes or pops off, is more serious: it happens when water absorbed into the brick freezes and expands, breaking the surface apart over freeze-thaw cycles.
