Walking into a hardwood dealer, though, requires understanding a whole vocabulary that the board-foot number does not touch: the grade that describes a board's quality, the peculiar quarter system used to specify thickness, and the difference between rough and surfaced lumber that determines what you actually take home. Hardwood Grades

Unlike construction lumber, hardwood is sold by grade, a rating of how much clear, defect-free wood a board yields. Higher grades have larger, cleaner areas free of knots and defects; lower grades have more character and flaws but cost less and can be perfectly good when cut into smaller parts.

The grade matters for both price and yield: a top grade costs more but wastes less on a project needing long, clear parts, while a lower grade can be economical for a project cut into short pieces where defects can be worked around. Matching grade to the project is a real cost decision the board-foot figure alone cannot make.

The Quarter System for Thickness

Hardwood thickness is specified in a system that surprises newcomers: it is quoted in quarters of an inch, written as a fraction over four. A one-inch-thick board is called "four-quarter" and written 4/4; a two-inch board is "eight-quarter," 8/4, and so on. This refers to the rough, unsurfaced thickness. The quarter system exists because hardwood is sawn to these standard rough thicknesses at the mill, and it is the language dealers and price lists use. Knowing that 4/4 means roughly an inch of rough stock, which will surface down to somewhat less, is essential to ordering the right thickness for a project.

Rough vs Surfaced

Hardwood can be bought rough-sawn, straight off the saw with a coarse surface and slightly oversized dimensions, or surfaced, run through a planer to a smooth, uniform, and thinner final thickness. The distinction has real consequences. Rough lumber is cheaper per board foot and measured at its full rough dimension, but you must have the tools to flatten and thickness it yourself, and it will lose material in the process. Surfaced lumber (designations indicate how many faces were planed) is ready to use but thinner and pricier. This is also why board-foot calculations for rough lumber use the nominal rough thickness, you are paying for the wood before it is planed away.

Why This Changes the Math

These conventions mean the board feet you buy and the wood you end up using are not the same. Rough 4/4 stock surfaces down to less than an inch, and flattening removes more; grade and defects mean part of every board is unusable for critical parts. A realistic hardwood order therefore accounts for grade-driven yield, the thickness lost in surfacing, and a waste allowance, which is why experienced woodworkers buy meaningfully more board footage than their finished parts total.
