A Third Kind of Eye Cell
For most of history, vision science recognized two light-sensing cells in the eye: rods and cones. Then researchers identified a third type of receptor, containing a pigment called melanopsin, whose job is not to form images but to report ambient brightness — especially blue light — to the brain's master clock. This discovery explained why light influences alertness and sleep independently of what we consciously see.
The Circadian Signal
These receptors feed the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the brain region that keeps the body's roughly 24-hour circadian rhythm in step with the day. Bright, cool light in the morning and midday reinforces wakefulness; dim, warm light in the evening lets the body wind toward sleep. A room lit against this grain — harsh light at night, gloom by day — works against the occupant's own physiology.
