Dew Point Is a Direct Moisture Reading

Dew point is the temperature to which air must cool for its water vapor to saturate and begin condensing. Its great virtue is stability: because it reflects the actual amount of moisture in the air, it does not change as the air warms or cools through the day, unlike relative humidity, which swings with temperature even when the moisture is constant. So a dew point of a sticky value feels muggy whether the thermometer reads warm or hot, giving an honest, temperature-independent measure of how much water vapor the air holds. The higher the dew point, the more moisture in the air, the harder it is for sweat to evaporate, and the more oppressive it feels. How Dew and Fog Form

Dew point directly explains condensation. On a clear, calm night, the ground and surfaces radiate heat to the sky and cool, and the air just above them cools too. When that air cools to its dew point, it saturates and water vapor condenses into liquid, dew on the grass. If a deeper layer of air near the ground cools to its dew point, the condensation happens throughout that layer as suspended droplets, and that is fog, essentially a cloud at ground level. This is why dew and fog appear on clear, still nights (radiational cooling is most effective without clouds or wind) and why the gap between the evening temperature and the dew point tells you how likely they are: a small gap means cooling will reach saturation.

When It's Freezing: Frost

When the dew point is below freezing, the same process produces frost instead of dew. If a surface cools to a below-freezing saturation temperature, water vapor deposits directly as ice crystals, skipping the liquid stage, coating grass and windows in frost. This is why frost forms on the same kind of clear, calm, cold nights that would otherwise produce dew, the difference is simply whether the saturation temperature is above or below freezing. Understanding this connects dew point to frost forecasting: when overnight temperatures are expected to fall to a sub-freezing dew (frost) point, frost becomes likely, which matters for gardeners and drivers alike.
