Mammals and birds are endotherms: they burn energy constantly to keep a stable internal temperature, which is why they are "warm-blooded" and need to eat so much. Reptiles took a different path. Why the Gradient Is Non-Negotiable
This is why the calculator insists on a temperature gradient rather than an evenly heated tank. A reptile needs a warm basking zone and a cooler retreat within the same enclosure, so it can shuttle between them and self-regulate just as it would in nature. A uniformly warm box traps the animal at a single temperature with no way to cool down; a uniformly cool one leaves it unable to warm up. The whole point of the two heating methods, a basking hot spot and gentler background warmth, is to create the range the reptile's behavior depends on.
Temperature Is Life Support
For an ectotherm, temperature is not a comfort setting but a biological necessity. A reptile that is too cool cannot properly digest its food, and its immune defenses and activity falter, so getting the heat wrong makes the animal sluggish, sick, or unable to process a meal. Correct temperatures are as essential as correct food.
