Batteries Age Two Different Ways at Once
An EV battery loses capacity through two separate mechanisms. Calendar aging happens simply with the passage of time, accelerated by heat and by sitting at very high states of charge. Cycle aging happens through use - every charge and discharge nudges capacity down a little, with fast charging and deep discharges taking a bigger toll than gentle, partial cycles. The Buffer You Never See
Manufacturers rarely let you use every electron in the pack. Why an EV Often Goes Farther in the City
Here is the input that trips up anyone raised on gasoline. A combustion car is most efficient on the highway and worst in stop-and-go city traffic, because idling and constant re-acceleration waste fuel that is simply thrown away as heat. Electric cars invert this. Two effects combine:
- Regenerative braking recovers energy. Every time an EV slows, the motor runs as a generator and pours energy back into the battery instead of burning it off as brake heat. City driving is full of slowing and stopping, so a large share of the energy spent accelerating is clawed back - something no gasoline car can do.
- Aerodynamic drag dominates at speed. Air resistance rises with the square of speed, so sustained highway velocity demands a lot of continuous power with nothing to recover. The faster the cruise, the harder drag bites.
The result is that many EVs post a higher efficiency - more miles per kWh - in city driving than on the highway, the exact opposite of the fuel-economy pattern drivers expect. Plugging a lower efficiency figure into this calculator for a highway trip, and a higher one for city use, is not a rounding choice; it reflects a real reversal in how the drivetrain behaves.
