Before a single post goes in, one question outranks the material list: exactly where is the property line? Fences built on assumption rather than a real survey are behind countless neighbor conflicts, and a fence placed even slightly over a boundary can have to be moved at the builder's expense. Compounding this, many jurisdictions impose setback rules requiring a fence to sit a certain distance inside the line, and limit fence height, especially near street corners where sight lines matter. Why Posts Are the Whole Game

A fence is only as sound as its posts. The panels and rails the calculator counts are essentially cladding hung between posts; it is the posts that resist wind, keep the fence plumb, and carry every load. A leaning, sagging, or fallen fence is almost always a post-setting failure, not a panel failure. This is why the posts deserve far more care than their share of the material list suggests.

Frost, Depth, and Drainage

Two forces topple posts, and both are about the ground. In cold climates, water in the soil freezes and expands, and if a post's footing sits above the frost line, that expansion can heave it upward season after season until the fence tilts. Setting posts below the local frost depth puts the footing beneath the freezing zone so it stays put. The second force is water pooling around the post base, which rots wood and softens the soil's grip; good practice provides drainage at the bottom of the hole, often a layer of gravel, so water does not collect against the post. A post set too shallow, or in a hole that holds water, is a fence that will lean, regardless of how well the panels were counted.

Building a Fence That Stands
