The Four Elements Started as a Theory of Physical Matter, Not Personality

Students rated the accuracy of their supposedly individual reading remarkably highly on average, a result replicated many times since and now commonly called the Forer effect (or Barnum effect, after showman P.T. Barnum). The mechanism is straightforward: broad, flattering, or ambiguous statements are easy for almost anyone to find personal relevance in, since human personalities and relationships are complex enough that most people can locate confirming examples for almost any sufficiently general claim about themselves.

Why Compatibility Readings Are Especially Well-Suited to This Effect

A statement like "an exciting, mutually encouraging match" or "a stable, grounded connection" describes qualities present in a huge range of real relationships to at least some degree - meaning whichever element pairing a compatibility calculator returns, the accompanying description is likely to resonate with genuine, real experiences the two people have actually had together, not because the element theory identified something true about their specific pairing, but because the description was worded broadly enough to fit a wide range of real relationship dynamics from the outset.

Applying This When Reading a Compatibility Result

None of this means an element-based compatibility read can't be an enjoyable, reflective conversation starter about a relationship - it just means the feeling of personal accuracy it produces is a well-documented psychological pattern that applies to essentially any sufficiently broad personality or relationship description, astrological or otherwise, which is worth keeping in mind before treating any single reading as uniquely revealing about one specific pairing.
