Two Different Ways to Run Dry

Starvation is especially bitter because there is fuel aboard the whole time. It is also why "usable fuel" matters: every tank has a quantity that cannot be drawn in normal attitudes - the unusable fuel - which the useful reserve calculation must sit on top of, never dip into.

Two Famous Lessons

The reserve rules are written in incidents. In 1983 a Boeing 767 - later nicknamed the Gimli Glider - ran completely dry at altitude over Canada after a fuel load computed in the wrong units left it with roughly half the intended fuel; the crew glided it to a deadstick landing on a former airfield. In 1990 an airliner holding near New York exhausted its fuel and crashed after the crew failed to declare a fuel emergency clearly enough to be prioritized. One was an arithmetic and unit-conversion failure; the other a communication and decision failure. Neither aircraft was broken. Both are now permanent fixtures of fuel-planning training.

The Psychology That Burns the Reserve

Reserve fuel is uniquely vulnerable because it is defined as fuel you plan never to use - which makes it feel, in the moment, like fuel you could use just this once. The pressures are predictable: get-there-itis (the pull to complete the trip as planned), sunk-cost thinking near the destination, optimism that the headwind will ease or the hold will end, and reluctance to divert to an unfamiliar airport. Every one of these quietly argues for spending the buffer, and the buffer only exists because someone, someday, will be tempted to spend it.

Why Night and IFR Reserves Are Larger

Reserve minimums rise for night and instrument flying for a simple reason: the situations that consume unplanned fuel - a missed approach, a hold, a diversion to a more distant alternate - are both more likely and more consuming when the weather is poor or the field is unlit. The bigger reserve is not bureaucratic caution; it is sized to the diversions those conditions actually produce.

Treating the Reserve as Untouchable

Use the calculator's figure as a floor that lands in the tanks, not a number you plan toward and hope to preserve.
