Pour sand into a jar and however you shake it, a predictable fraction remains empty space between the grains. How tightly particles pack together — the geometry of grains and the voids among them — governs whether soil is loose or dense, and it is the quiet variable behind how ground settles, drains, and bears weight.

Solids and Voids

Any soil is a mixture of solid grains and the void space between them, filled with air or water. The balance between the two is captured by the void ratio — the volume of voids compared to the volume of solids. A high void ratio means loose, open soil with much empty space; a low one means dense, tightly packed soil. This single ratio says much about how the soil will behave.

How grains pack depends on their shapes, sizes, and arrangement. Uniform spheres, however carefully arranged, always leave a characteristic fraction of empty space — they simply cannot fill all the room. Why Engineers Prefer It

Geotechnical engineers favor the void ratio over the related measure of porosity for a practical reason: when soil is compressed under a load, its solid grains stay essentially unchanged while only the voids shrink. Because the void ratio references the constant solid volume, it changes in a simple, direct way as soil compresses — making the mathematics of settlement far cleaner.

Loose soil with abundant voids compresses noticeably as a structure presses the grains into a tighter arrangement, squeezing out air and water and causing the surface to settle.
