The Nitrogen Paradox
Nitrogen is everywhere — it makes up most of the air — yet plants starve for it. The reason is that atmospheric nitrogen exists as an extraordinarily stable molecule that plants cannot use directly. To grow, they need nitrogen in a “fixed” form, and for most of history the supply of usable nitrogen was the great limit on how much food the land could yield.
Fixing the Unfixable
In the early twentieth century, the chemists Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch developed a process to break apart atmospheric nitrogen under enormous heat and pressure and combine it with hydrogen to make ammonia — the basis of synthetic fertilizer. For the first time, humans could manufacture usable nitrogen at industrial scale, lifting the ancient ceiling on agricultural production.

Feeding Billions
The impact is hard to overstate. Synthetic nitrogen fertilizer dramatically raised crop yields, and it is estimated that a large fraction of the world's population is alive today only because of the food this process makes possible.
