Heat Is Not Temperature: A Crucial Distinction

In everyday speech heat and temperature are used interchangeably, but in physics — and in HVAC — they are entirely different things. Confusing them leads to real errors in understanding why a system behaves as it does. The distinction, first made sharp by an eighteenth-century chemist, underlies the very idea of a sensible heat load.

Two Different Questions

Temperature answers “how hot?” — the intensity of thermal energy, what a thermometer reads. Heat answers “how much?” — the total quantity of thermal energy involved. A lit match burns at a high temperature but holds little heat; a warm bathtub is at a modest temperature yet contains enormous heat. Intensity and quantity are simply not the same measurement.

Black Draws the Line

The chemist Joseph Black clarified this in the eighteenth century by observing that different substances require different amounts of heat to reach the same temperature, and that mixing bodies of different temperatures reaches an equilibrium governed by their quantities of heat, not their temperatures alone. His work separated the intensity of heat from its amount — a foundation of the science of calorimetry, the measurement of heat quantities.

Sensible Heat and the Thermometer

Sensible heat is heat that changes temperature — heat you can sense as a thermometer reading rising or falling. When an air conditioner cools a room and the thermometer drops, it is removing sensible heat. This is the portion of the cooling job that shows up as a temperature change, distinct from the heat spent changing humidity without moving the thermometer at all.

Why the Distinction Matters in Practice

A system that lowers temperature quickly has handled the sensible load, but a room can still feel clammy if the other, hidden portion of heat — tied to moisture — has not been addressed. Recognizing that heat and temperature are different is exactly what lets an engineer see that a comfortable thermometer reading does not guarantee comfort, and that total load is more than what the thermometer shows.
