Running on Time, Not Space
The earliest railways spaced trains by time: a following train was held back a few minutes, on the assumption that the one ahead kept moving. But a train ahead does not always keep moving; it can stall, break down, or stop unexpectedly. When it did, the time interval evaporated and the following train ran into it. Because the calculator's whole premise is separation by distance, it quietly rejects the time-interval world that preceded it.
The Absolute Block
The remedy was the block: divide the line into sections and permit only one train in each at a time, confirmed by signals and, crucially, by the telegraph so signalmen could tell each other whether the section ahead was clear. A train could not enter a block until the previous one had left it. This "absolute block" converts the vague time cushion into a hard guarantee of physical space, precisely the space the spacing calculation is meant to size.

Interlocking: Making Conflicting Routes Impossible
Junctions posed a second danger: a signalman could clear a signal for one train while the points were set for another's path. Interlocking, mechanically linking signals and points so that a conflicting combination physically cannot be set, closed that gap. The principle is fail-safe by design: the machinery refuses to display a green unless the route ahead is actually safe and reserved. Why Every Rule Has a Wreck Behind It
Many of these safeguards, the absolute block, mandatory interlocking, continuous automatic braking, were made compulsory only after a single terrible accident concentrated public and legislative attention.
