Newton Bends the Spectrum Into a Circle
In the seventeenth century Isaac Newton passed white light through a prism and split it into the spectrum, then made a radical move: he joined the two ends of that linear spectrum into a circle. Bending red around to meet violet created the first color wheel and captured a truth the straight spectrum hid — that the extremes of color are perceptually related and that mixtures could be predicted by position on the ring.
Chevreul and the Law of Contrast
In the nineteenth century the chemist Michel Eug├¿ne Chevreul, working at a tapestry works, noticed that a color's appearance shifts depending on its neighbors. His law of simultaneous contrast — that adjacent colors influence one another, and that opposites intensify each other — gave a scientific basis for why complementary pairs feel so vivid together, a cornerstone of color scheming ever since.

Munsell Adds Dimensions
An artist and teacher, Albert Munsell, recognized that a flat wheel was not enough: color also varies in lightness and intensity. Early in the twentieth century he built a three-dimensional system organizing every color by hue, value (lightness), and chroma (saturation) — a rigorous map that let colors be specified precisely and is still used in fields from art to soil science.
Itten and the Designer's Wheel
At the Bauhaus, Johannes Itten distilled color relationships into teachable contrasts and a twelve-part wheel aimed squarely at artists and designers. His work turned centuries of theory into a practical studio tool — the familiar wheel of primaries, secondaries, and tertiaries from which complementary, analogous, and triadic schemes are read off by angle.
