The Threshold: A History of Doors and Locks

A door is the most charged boundary in any building — the point of passage between inside and outside, safety and the world, the private and the public. Behind the simple act of swapping a door lies a long history of security, symbolism, and the ancient technology of the lock.

The Door as Boundary

Every door marks a threshold, and cultures have long invested that boundary with meaning — guarded, decorated, ritualized. The entrance to a home or temple was where the outside world was granted or denied passage, and grand doorways announced the importance of what lay beyond. To control a door was to control access, which made the door a symbol of power and protection.

The Ancient Lock

Securing a door required the lock, one of humanity's older mechanical inventions. Early locks used a simple but ingenious idea: pins that dropped into a bolt to hold it, lifted only by the right key. This pin-and-tumbler principle, thousands of years old, still underlies the common household lock — a mechanism refined but not fundamentally replaced across millennia.

Interior Versus Exterior

The two great families of door reflect their different jobs. Interior doors chiefly provide privacy and finish, so they are lighter, simpler, and cheaper. Exterior doors must resist forced entry and the weather, carrying robust security hardware, solid cores, and weatherstripping — and costing considerably more. An exterior door's resistance to intrusion depends on more than its lock: a solid or steel core resists being kicked or battered, a reinforced frame anchors the strike plate, and quality deadbolts extend deep into the jamb.
