So closely was glass tied to wealth that some governments taxed windows directly, charging householders by the number of openings in their homes. The result was visible and lasting: owners bricked up windows to lower their tax bills, and some buildings still bear the blind, filled-in openings today. The decisive modern advance was the float process, which forms glass by floating molten material on a bed of liquid metal to produce perfectly flat, clear sheets cheaply and continuously. This innovation made large, flawless panes ordinary, ending centuries in which clear glass was a scarce luxury and enabling the expansive windows of modern buildings.

From Single Pane to Insulated Unit
