Where It Falls Short

Despite its power, alcohol sanitizer has genuine limits. It works poorly on hands that are visibly dirty or greasy, because the grime shields germs from the alcohol, and it is less effective against certain hardy microbes that resist alcohol's action. Sanitizer also does not physically remove dirt and residue the way washing does; it kills germs in place but leaves the debris. For these reasons, it is a supplement to handwashing, not a full replacement, best for when soap and water are not available.

The distinction matters. Washing with soap and water physically lifts germs and grime off the hands and rinses them away, working even on dirty hands and against germs alcohol cannot kill. Sanitizer, by contrast, chemically destroys many germs on the spot but cannot clean or handle everything.
