There is a whole family of ways to express how much water vapor air holds, each answering a different question. Understanding the differences, and why relative humidity behaves so counterintuitively, turns a percentage into real insight about the air's moisture.
Several Ways to Measure Moisture
"How humid is it?" has more than one answer, because moisture can be expressed as an absolute amount or as a ratio.

Absolute and specific humidity describe the actual quantity of water vapor present, and they do not change just because the temperature changes. Relative humidity, by contrast, is a comparison to a moving target, and that is the source of its trickiness.
Why Relative Humidity Misleads
Relative humidity compares the moisture in the air to the maximum the air could hold at its current temperature, and warmer air can hold much more water vapor before saturating. This means relative humidity changes with temperature even if not a single molecule of water is added or removed. On a cool morning, a given amount of moisture might read as high relative humidity; as the day warms, the same moisture reads as much lower relative humidity, because the air's capacity grew. So a falling relative humidity through the day does not mean the air dried out, it usually means it warmed up. This is why relative humidity, despite being the familiar number, is a poor indicator of how much moisture is actually in the air.
Why Dew Point Is Better for Comfort
Because relative humidity swings with temperature, meteorologists prefer dew point as a measure of how humid the air genuinely is. Dew point is essentially a direct readout of the absolute moisture content: it does not change as the air warms or cools through the day, so a high dew point means sticky, muggy air regardless of the thermometer, while a low dew point means dry air. This stability is why dew point is the honest "mugginess" indicator, and why the gap between temperature and dew point, a small gap means high relative humidity, tells you more than relative humidity alone. The two are related, but dew point anchors to real moisture while relative humidity floats with temperature.
The Saturation Ceiling
Underlying all of this is saturation: the maximum water vapor air can hold, which rises steeply with temperature. When air reaches this ceiling, relative humidity is 100 percent and moisture begins condensing out as dew, fog, or clouds. The temperature-dependence of this ceiling is the key to everything, it is why warm tropical air can hold so much moisture and why cooling humid air wrings water out of it. Reading Humidity Correctly
