Where the Rule Came From

The origin of the “8x8” rule — eight eight-ounce glasses — is murky, often traced to a decades-old recommendation that also noted much of that water comes from food, a caveat that got lost in retelling. The catchy number survived; the context did not. As a result, a rough guideline hardened into a precise-sounding rule with little direct evidence behind it.
