The totals are useful, but they hide the more interesting story: a newborn's sleep is structured completely differently from an adult's, and the frequent waking that exhausts new parents is not a flaw to be fixed so much as a stage the brain has to grow out of.

The Clock That Is Not Installed Yet

Adults run on a circadian rhythm, an internal roughly-24-hour clock tuned by light and darkness and expressed partly through the hormone melatonin. Newborns are not born with this system running. In the womb there is no day or night, and it takes months for a baby's own circadian rhythm and melatonin cycling to develop and lock onto the outside world. Until it does, a newborn's sleep is scattered fairly evenly around the clock, which is precisely why a two-week-old is as likely to be wide awake at 3 a.m. as at 3 p.m. The absence of a day-night pattern is developmental, not a bad habit.

Shorter Cycles, More of the Active Kind

Because cycles are short and the seams between them are natural waking points, babies surface often. And because so much of infant sleep is the active, dream-like kind thought to support the explosive brain development of the first year, a sleeping baby is doing important developmental work, not merely resting.

Why "Sleeping Through the Night" Is a Milestone, Not a Skill

Stringing sleep cycles together into a long overnight block depends on the circadian system maturing and on the baby being able to go longer between feeds as their stomach grows. Both are developmental thresholds. This is why sleeping through the night arrives on a wide and individual timeline, and why it is better understood as a milestone a baby grows into than a behavior that can simply be trained on demand. Some settle early, some later, and the range is broad and normal.

Naps Consolidate as the System Matures

The same maturation explains the shift the calculator's totals only hint at. As the circadian rhythm strengthens, scattered newborn sleep gradually organizes into a longer night plus a shrinking number of daytime naps, until a young child is down to a single afternoon nap. The total falls with age, but the bigger change is this consolidation from many fragments into a couple of solid blocks.

Treat this calculator's ranges as broad benchmarks, not schedules a baby has failed if they miss. Individual sleep needs vary widely, and early fragmented sleep is normal biology.
