It aims for something a pill often cannot achieve: a steady, controlled level of medicine in the blood, held right where it works best. The science behind that steadiness is the study of how the body handles drugs over time.

The Rise and Fall of a Dose

A single dose of medicine rises to a peak as it is absorbed, then falls as the body clears it, tracing a curve of concentration over time. For many drugs this swing is fine, but some work best — or only safely — within a narrow band of blood levels. Too high risks toxicity; too low loses effect. The peaks and troughs of intermittent dosing can overshoot both edges.

Infusion Smooths the Curve

A continuous infusion supplies the drug at a constant rate, and as the body simultaneously clears it, the two eventually balance. The blood level rises and then levels off at a steady plateau — the steady state — where input matches removal. This holds the concentration within the desired range without the peaks and valleys of separate doses.

Reaching Steady State

Steady state is not instant — it takes time to build, governed by how quickly the body clears the drug. A medicine cleared slowly takes longer to plateau, which is why an initial larger “loading” dose is sometimes given to reach the target level faster, then maintained by infusion.
