For the Joy of It: The Psychology of Intrinsic Motivation

A hobby is something done for its own sake, not for money or obligation — and that distinction turns out to matter enormously for wellbeing. The psychology of intrinsic motivation explains why activities pursued purely for enjoyment nourish us differently than those we do for reward, and why protecting that purity is worth the effort.

Two Kinds of Motivation

Psychologists distinguish intrinsic motivation — doing something because it is inherently interesting or enjoyable — from extrinsic motivation, doing it for an external reward like money, grades, or praise. Hobbies are the purest form of intrinsic motivation: activities chosen freely, for the satisfaction of the activity itself, answerable to no one.

Why Intrinsic Matters

Activities driven by intrinsic motivation tend to be more absorbing, more satisfying, and more sustaining than those done merely for reward. They provide a sense of mastery and identity outside of work and obligation, a space where one acts freely rather than under pressure. This is much of why hobbies are linked to lower stress and a richer sense of self.

The Overjustification Trap

Curiously, adding external rewards to an intrinsically enjoyable activity can backfire — the “overjustification effect,” in which paying someone to do what they already loved can erode their spontaneous enjoyment of it. Turning a beloved hobby into a hustle risks killing the very pleasure that made it valuable, which is why some things are best kept unmonetized.

Your Own Target

Because the value of a hobby lies in freely chosen enjoyment, there is no universal “right” amount — it depends on a person's life, demands, and preferences. Measuring hobby time against one's own chosen goal, rather than an external standard, honors the intrinsic spirit of the thing: it is your enjoyment, on your terms, that the number is meant to protect.
