How Lightning Forms

Lightning is a giant electrical discharge born from charge separation inside a storm cloud. As ice crystals and water droplets collide and churn in a towering thundercloud's violent updrafts, they transfer electric charge, and the cloud becomes separated into regions of positive and negative charge, typically negative near the base and positive higher up, with an induced positive charge on the ground below. This builds an immense voltage difference, and when it grows large enough to overcome the air's resistance, the charge discharges in a lightning bolt, a sudden, massive flow of electricity that neutralizes the separation. Lightning is, in essence, nature relieving an enormous built-up electrical imbalance, and it can leap within a cloud, between clouds, or to the ground.

Why Thunder Is a Shockwave

Thunder is the sound of lightning, and its cause is dramatic. A lightning channel heats the surrounding air almost instantly to a temperature several times hotter than the surface of the sun. That superheated air expands explosively, faster than the speed of sound, creating a shockwave that we hear as thunder. The sharp crack of a nearby strike and the long rumble of a distant one are the same shockwave, shaped by distance and the terrain the sound travels over. So thunder is not a separate event but the acoustic aftermath of the bolt's violent heating of the air, which is why every lightning flash has thunder, even if it is too far away to hear.

You see the flash essentially the instant it happens, but the thunder takes time to reach you at the speed of sound. Counting the seconds between them and dividing gives the distance, because the delay is entirely the sound's travel time. This is why the method is reliable, it is really measuring how long sound took to cover the gap, and it needs no instruments.

The 30-30 Rule

The flash-to-bang count is also a safety tool. The widely cited 30-30 rule has two parts: if the time between the flash and the thunder is 30 seconds or less, meaning the lightning is roughly six miles away or closer, the storm is close enough to be dangerous and you should already be seeking shelter, because the next strike could reach you. The second 30 is a timing rule: wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back outside, since lightning can strike well after the rain seems to have passed. Crucially, lightning can strike far from the visible rain, "a bolt from the blue," so hearing thunder at all means you are within potential striking range. The saying captures it: when thunder roars, go indoors.
