Real lumber carries a grade that governs its strength, and a moisture content that changes its size and behavior over time. Nominal Versus Actual
A "2x4" is a nominal size, a name, not a measurement. The actual milled board is smaller, about an inch and a half by three and a half inches. The reason is history and process: the nominal size refers roughly to the rough-sawn dimension when the board was first cut green from the log, before it was dried and then planed smooth on all four sides. Drying shrinks the wood, and surfacing, or dressing, planes away more to produce the smooth, uniform board sold at the store.

Grade: Not All Boards Are Equal
Two 2x4s can differ dramatically in strength and appearance because lumber is graded. Graders assess each board for the defects that weaken it or mar it, knots, their size and location, the grain slope, splits, and warp, and assign a grade. Higher structural grades have fewer and smaller strength-reducing defects and carry higher allowable loads; lower grades are weaker and cheaper. For anything load-bearing, the grade stamp matters as much as the size, a low-grade stud is not interchangeable with a select structural one, even at identical dimensions. Moisture: Wood Is Never Truly Still
Wood constantly exchanges moisture with the air, and its moisture content affects both its size and its strength. Freshly cut green lumber is heavy with water and will shrink, twist, and check as it dries. Kiln-dried lumber has been dried to a lower, more stable moisture content, so it moves less after installation. Building with lumber that is too wet invites problems as it dries in place, gaps opening, nails backing out, framing warping. This is why moisture content, often marked on the lumber, is a real specification, not a detail, especially for framing that must stay dimensionally stable.
Species and Where It's Used
Finally, species matters. Softwoods like spruce, pine, and fir dominate framing for their workability and cost; denser species carry more load; and naturally decay-resistant or pressure-treated lumber is required wherever wood contacts the ground or weather. Using untreated interior-grade lumber in an exposed, wet location is a common and costly mistake, it rots. The right board is a combination of size, grade, moisture, and species matched to the job.
