The Inert Majority
Air is roughly four-fifths nitrogen, and this nitrogen is dragged into every combustion process along with the oxygen the fire actually needs. Nitrogen is chemically aloof — it does not burn — so most of it passes straight through the flame and out the stack unchanged. This is why nitrogen dominates flue gas by volume, forming the large, unreactive bulk of the exhaust.

Because nitrogen is inert and abundant, it is usually not measured directly but found by difference — subtracting the measured oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other components from the whole. Whatever remains is nitrogen. This works precisely because nitrogen is the passive filler of the exhaust, the everything-else that makes up the balance once the reactive gases are accounted for.

The Heat That Corrupts It
The trouble begins at high temperatures. In the hottest part of a flame, some of the inert nitrogen is forced to react with oxygen, forming nitrogen oxides — NOx. These are genuine pollutants, contributing to smog, acid rain, and respiratory harm. The very gas that passed harmlessly through becomes a villain, created not from the fuel but from the air itself under fierce heat.
Fighting NOx
Because NOx forms mainly at peak flame temperatures, much of the effort to reduce it aims to cool or spread the combustion — lowering the hottest spots so less nitrogen is corrupted. Special low-NOx burners and treatment systems tackle this. The paradox remains striking: one of combustion's worst pollutants comes not from a dirty fuel but from the ordinary, innocent nitrogen of the air.
