Sheen Is a Durability Decision

Sheen, how glossy the dried paint is, is usually chosen for looks, but it is really about how the surface will be used. Higher-gloss paints have more resin relative to pigment, which makes them harder, more moisture-resistant, and easier to scrub, but also more likely to show every bump and roller mark. Flat paints hide surface flaws beautifully and are nearly impossible to clean without leaving marks.

Hiding Power: Why Coverage Varies

The coverage figure the calculator assumes is an average, but real paints differ enormously in hiding power, their ability to obscure what is underneath in a single coat. Hiding power comes mostly from the pigment, especially the amount and quality of the white pigment that makes paint opaque. Cheap paints skimp on pigment, so they cover poorly and need extra coats, which is how a bargain gallon quietly becomes more expensive than a premium one that covers in fewer passes. Certain colors, deep reds, some yellows, use pigments that are inherently translucent and need more coats regardless of price.

Why Primer Exists

Primer is not just a cheap first coat. It does jobs that finish paint cannot: it seals porous surfaces so the finish coat does not soak in unevenly, it blocks stains and old colors from bleeding through, and it gives the topcoat something to grip. Painting a bold new color over a very different old one, or coating fresh drywall or bare wood, is exactly where skipping primer leads to extra finish coats and a patchy result. Priming can reduce the number of expensive finish coats you need, changing the arithmetic behind the gallon count.

The Batch-Match Problem

Tinted paint is mixed in batches, and no two batches are ever perfectly identical, tiny differences in colorant dosing shift the shade almost imperceptibly. Within a single can the color is uniform, but a touch-up months later from a different can, or a wall finished from a second can mid-job, can reveal a faint edge where the batches meet. This is why professionals box their paint, combining all the cans for a job into one large container and remixing, so the whole room comes from one blended batch. It is also why buying slightly more up front, from the same batch, beats running short and reordering.

Buying Paint With the Real Variables in Mind

Take the calculator's gallon estimate, then adjust for what actually drives it: choose sheen for how the surface will be used, factor in that a low-hiding paint or a difficult color needs more coats, and consider whether priming will cut a finish coat.
