Swimming can burn energy at a startling rate, and the reason lies in physics. Water is a far more demanding medium than air — hundreds of times denser, resisting every movement and stealing body heat relentlessly. Understanding the physical challenges of moving through water explains why swimming is such a complete and energy-hungry form of exercise.

A Denser World

Water is roughly eight hundred times denser than air, so pushing through it takes vastly more effort than moving through the atmosphere. Every stroke and kick must overcome this heavy resistance. This is why swimming works the whole body so thoroughly, and why even a moderate swim can be surprisingly exhausting compared with a similar effort on land.

The Drag Problem

A swimmer's central enemy is drag — the resistance of the water to forward motion. Drag rises steeply with speed, so swimming faster costs disproportionately more energy. Much of swimming technique is really about reducing drag: a streamlined body position slips through the water far more efficiently than a poorly aligned one, which is why form matters so much in the pool.
