What Equity Means
Equity is your share of the pot based on your probability of winning the hand if it went to showdown right now. If you have a 35 percent chance to make the best hand, you have 35 percent equity, meaning that over many identical situations you would win the pot 35 percent of the time. Equity is not a prediction about this hand, which you will simply win or lose, but a long-run average that tells you how much the situation is worth. It is the number every call-or-fold decision on a draw ultimately rests on.
Outs: The Cards That Save You
For a drawing hand, equity comes from outs, the unseen cards that would improve you to a likely winner. Nine cards complete a flush draw; eight complete an open-ended straight. The more outs, the higher your chance of hitting, and the exact probability of catching at least one is a hypergeometric calculation, one minus the chance of missing entirely, which the calculator computes precisely.
Why the Rule of 4 and 2 Works
Doing hypergeometric math in your head at the table is impractical, so players use a beautifully simple shortcut: multiply your outs by 4 with two cards to come, or by 2 with one card to come, to estimate your equity percentage.

The reason it works is that each unseen card gives roughly a two-percent chance per out to hit (one out among about fifty unseen cards is close to two percent), so one card to come is outs times two. With two cards to come you get roughly two chances, hence outs times four. It is a linear approximation of the real probability, and for the common out counts, up to about eight, it lands within a point or so of the exact figure. That accuracy is why it has become universal.
Where It Breaks Down
The shortcut drifts, and always in the same direction, as outs climb into the mid-teens. With many outs, multiplying by four overstates the true equity, sometimes by several points. The reason is double-counting: the times-four logic implicitly assumes the two chances to hit are independent and additive, but they overlap, some of the ways to hit on the turn and on the river are the same successful outcome counted twice. The more outs you have, the bigger this overlap, so the estimate inflates. For a monster draw with fifteen outs, the rule of 4 can overstate equity by five or six points, exactly where an accurate number matters most. The exact hypergeometric formula the calculator uses has no such error, because it correctly handles the overlap.
Why the Gap Matters
A few points of overstated equity can flip a decision. Poker choices come down to comparing your equity against the odds the pot is offering, and if the rule of 4 tells you that you have 60 percent equity when you really have 54, you may call a bet you should fold. For most draws the shortcut is fine, but for big multi-out draws, precisely the exciting hands where the stakes of the decision are highest, the exact figure is worth knowing. This is why studying the true numbers for large out counts builds better intuition than trusting the shortcut everywhere.
Using the Equity Figures Well
Take the calculator's exact equity as the true probability of improving your hand, and the rule-of-thumb figure as the table-usable estimate. Trust the shortcut for ordinary draws up to about eight outs, where it is very close, but remember it overstates equity for big draws in the mid-teens because it double-counts overlapping chances.
