A useful analogy: energy is like the total distance a car travels, while power is like its speed, the rate of covering distance. A powerful device uses energy quickly; a low-power device uses it slowly. This is why a small heater left on all day can consume more energy than a powerful appliance used briefly, low power over long time versus high power over short time. Power is energy per unit of time, which is the whole distinction.

Why Watts and Watt-Hours Differ

This power-energy distinction is exactly why watts and watt-hours are different, and why confusing them is so common on electricity bills. A watt is a unit of power, the rate. A watt-hour is a unit of energy, power sustained over time. Your electricity bill charges for energy, kilowatt-hours, because what you pay for is the total energy used, not the instantaneous rate. A device's wattage tells you how fast it draws energy; multiply that by the hours it runs and you get the watt-hours of energy consumed, which is what costs money. Saying a battery holds "so many watts" is a common error, batteries store energy, measured in watt-hours, not power. Keeping the rate (watts) distinct from the amount (watt-hours) clears up a great deal of confusion about electricity and energy.

Where the Horsepower Came From

The horsepower has one of the best origin stories in measurement. When steam engines were new, their inventor needed to sell them to people who powered their work with actual horses, and who naturally asked how many horses a given engine could replace. To answer in terms customers understood, he estimated how much work a typical draft horse could do in a given time, and defined the "horsepower" as that rate of work. An engine rated at so many horsepower was, in effect, advertised as doing the work of that many horses. It was brilliant marketing: it translated an unfamiliar new technology into a unit buyers already grasped intuitively. The horsepower stuck so thoroughly that we still rate engines by it centuries later, long after horses stopped being the benchmark, a dead unit kept alive by habit and familiarity.

Two Horsepowers, and Peak vs Continuous

Because the horsepower was defined by estimation and then adopted differently in different places, more than one version exists, the mechanical horsepower and a metric horsepower differ slightly, which is why the calculator keeps them separate and a spec's horsepower can be ambiguous. There is also a subtlety the units do not capture: a machine's peak power, the maximum rate it can briefly produce, differs from its continuous power, what it can sustain, so a headline horsepower figure may be a peak that cannot be maintained.
