Whether a roof lasts its full expected life or fails early depends far more on the underlayment, the flashing, and, surprisingly, the ventilation of the attic beneath it than on the shingles themselves. Shingles Shed Water; They Don't Seal It

A common misconception is that shingles waterproof a roof. They do not, they shed the bulk of the water, but wind-driven rain, ice, and the seams around every penetration get past them. The real defense is a layered system beneath.

Flashing: Where Roofs Actually Leak

Ask a roofer where roofs leak and the answer is rarely the middle of a shingle field, it is the flashing. Flashing is the metal that seals the vulnerable transitions: around chimneys and vents, in the valleys where two roof planes meet, and where the roof abuts a wall. These interruptions in the smooth field are where water concentrates and finds its way in. A roof with premium shingles and poor flashing leaks; a roof with modest shingles and excellent flashing stays dry. This is why the details at penetrations matter more than the shingle grade.

Ventilation: The Invisible Lifespan Factor

The least intuitive part of a roof system is the air in the attic below it. A properly ventilated attic draws cool air in low, at the eaves, and lets warm air out high, near the ridge. Without that airflow, summer heat builds up and bakes the shingles from underneath, shortening their life, and winter moisture condenses on the deck, rotting it. Poor ventilation can literally void a shingle warranty and age a roof years before its time. Ventilation is why two identical roofs, one vented and one not, can have very different lifespans.

Ice Dams and the Eaves

In cold climates, a specific failure mode drives a specific layer. When attic heat melts snow on the upper roof and it refreezes at the cold eaves, it forms an ice dam that backs water up under the shingles. This is why an ice-and-water shield, a self-sealing membrane, is applied along the eaves and in valleys: it seals against exactly this backup. It is also another reason ventilation matters, a cold, well-vented attic melts less snow and forms fewer ice dams in the first place.

Insist on proper flashing at every penetration and valley, confirm the attic is ventilated so the shingles do not cook or the deck rot, and in cold regions protect the eaves against ice dams.
