How Sanding Actually Works
Sanding does not "smooth" wood so much as replace one scratch pattern with a finer one. Each grit cuts a field of tiny scratches; the next finer grit removes those and leaves shallower scratches of its own, and so on until the scratches are too fine to see. This is why skipping grits fails, a much finer paper cannot cut deep enough to erase a coarse grit's scratches, so they remain, hidden until a finish makes them glare. The whole progression is a controlled march of ever-finer scratches, which is exactly what the calculator lays out, and understanding it explains why each step matters.
Two Grit Systems That Don't Match
A genuine source of confusion is that sandpaper grit is graded by two different standards that use similar numbers meaning different things.

The two systems diverge, especially at finer grits, so a plain "220" and a "P220" are not identical, and comparing papers across systems can mislead. The tell is the letter P: a P before the number means the European standard. Being aware that a grit number's meaning depends on its system prevents mismatched steps when mixing papers from different sources.
The Abrasive Material Matters
The grit number describes particle size, but the abrasive material describes how well and how long the paper cuts. Common woodworking abrasives include aluminum oxide, a durable, general-purpose workhorse that fractures to expose fresh edges as it wears; garnet, a natural abrasive that cuts finely but dulls faster, favored for a fine hand-sanded surface; and ceramic, a tough, long-lasting abrasive for aggressive stock removal. A cheap paper that clogs or dulls quickly is a false economy, better abrasives cut faster, last longer, and leave a more consistent scratch pattern. The material, not just the number, determines the paper's real performance.
Diminishing Returns and Raising the Grain
On bare wood, sanding beyond a certain fineness stops helping and can even hurt. Past a point, usually a moderately fine grit for wood taking a finish, the wood's surface is smooth enough that finer sanding burnishes the fibers and can actually impede stain absorption, causing blotchy color. This is why furniture is typically sanded to a sensible stopping grit before finishing rather than polished like metal, going finer wastes effort and can make staining worse. Very fine grits belong to finishing the finish, rubbing out a cured topcoat, not preparing raw wood. Knowing when to stop is as important as knowing the progression. Water-based finishes also raise the grain, lifting fibers that need a light final sanding.
