Bigger Bodies Lift More

Larger people are, on average, stronger in absolute terms — more muscle means more force. So a raw comparison of total weight lifted inevitably favors the heaviest athletes, making it an unfair way to crown the strongest overall. To rank fairly across weight classes, the advantage of sheer size must somehow be removed, revealing strength relative to body mass.

Strength Doesn't Scale Simply

The catch is that strength does not scale with body weight in a straight line. Muscle force depends roughly on cross-sectional area, which grows more slowly than body mass as a person gets bigger. This means larger athletes are stronger in absolute terms but often weaker pound for pound — a principle from the biology of scaling known as allometry. The Wilks Formula
