The Dots Are the Combination Count

Look under the number on any Catan tile and you will find a row of small dots. That count is not decorative, it is exactly the number of ways two dice can make that number, out of thirty-six. The 6 and 8 tiles have five dots each (the most), the 2 and 12 have one dot each (the fewest), and the counts rise and fall symmetrically around the missing 7. The game hands you the probability distribution directly; the dots let you rank tiles at a glance without doing any arithmetic.

Why the Board Spreads the Red Numbers

The 6 and 8 are often printed in red to flag them as the best numbers, and the standard setup rules forbid placing two red numbers on adjacent tiles. This is a deliberate design choice: it prevents one corner of the board from hoarding all the production and forces the valuable numbers to spread out, which in turn spreads the contested settlement spots around the map. It is a balancing rule enforced through probability.

Odds Are Not Outcomes: The Variance Trap

Here is the hard lesson every Catan player learns. A settlement on a 6 and an 8 has the best long-run odds, but any single game is short, and short runs are dominated by variance, the random scatter around the average. A high-pip number can simply fail to come up for many rolls in a row, while someone's lonely 3 keeps hitting. This is not the dice being broken; it is small-sample variance, and mistaking a cold streak for a rigged board is the gambler's fallacy in action. The dots tell you the right bet, not the guaranteed result.

Diversity Versus Raw Odds

Because variance is real, strong placement is not only about grabbing the highest pips. Touching a spread of different numbers means fewer rolls leave you producing nothing, and touching a variety of resources protects you from being starved of one type. A settlement on a 6, a 4, and a 10 can be more resilient than one doubling down on two high-pip tiles of the same resource, it trades a little peak probability for steadier, more diverse income.

Using the Probabilities Well
