A human body is, more than anything else, water — the majority of your weight is fluid. Total body water is not idle filler but the medium in which all of life's chemistry unfolds, carefully divided into compartments and regulated within tight limits. Understanding it reframes the body as a finely managed aquatic system.

The Watery Majority

Water makes up a large fraction of body weight — more in lean, muscular bodies, less in fatter ones, since muscle holds far more water than fat. This is why body water percentage varies with age, sex, and composition, and why it tends to be higher in those with more lean mass. We are, quite literally, mostly fluid.

Two Great Compartments

Body water is split between the inside of cells and the space outside them. Most water resides within the cells — the intracellular fluid where metabolism happens — while the rest fills the extracellular space, including the fluid between cells and the plasma of the blood. The balance between these compartments is vital and tightly controlled.

Water as the Medium of Life

Nearly every biological process happens in water: nutrients dissolve and travel in it, chemical reactions occur within it, waste is carried away by it, and temperature is regulated through it. Water is the solvent and transport system of the body all at once — not a passive filler but the active medium that makes cellular life possible.

Kept in Balance

The body guards its water content and the distribution between compartments within narrow limits, because too much or too little in the wrong place disrupts cells. Electrolytes like sodium and potassium govern how water moves across cell membranes, and the kidneys fine-tune the total. Body water is a dynamic equilibrium, constantly adjusted to keep the internal sea just right.
