UVC is the most dangerous but is blocked entirely by the atmosphere's ozone layer, which is why the ozone layer matters so much. UVB is the burning radiation, responsible for sunburn and much skin-cancer risk. UVA is less energetic but penetrates deeper into the skin, driving premature aging and contributing to cancer too. A useful memory aid: UVB burns, UVA ages. Effective sun protection must guard against both, which is why "broad spectrum" is a meaningful label.
How the Index Is Built
The UV Index is not a raw measurement of ultraviolet energy; it is weighted by how harmful each wavelength is to skin. Because different UV wavelengths cause sunburn to very different degrees, the index applies an "erythemal" (skin-reddening) weighting that emphasizes the most damaging wavelengths, then sums the result into a single scale. This means the index reflects biological harm potential, not just intensity, which is why it is a health tool rather than a physics readout. Its value depends on the sun's angle (time of day and season), the ozone thickness, altitude, and cloud cover, all of which the forecast integrates. What SPF Actually Means
Sunscreen's SPF number is one of the most misunderstood figures in health. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) primarily measures protection against UVB, the burning band, and it indicates roughly how much longer protected skin can be exposed before burning compared to unprotected skin, and equivalently what fraction of UVB is blocked. Crucially, the relationship is not linear in the way people assume: higher SPF numbers block only marginally more UVB than moderate ones, and no sunscreen blocks everything. SPF also says little about UVA protection unless the product is labeled broad spectrum. And real-world protection is far lower than the label if sunscreen is applied too thinly or not reapplied. Understanding SPF as a UVB metric with diminishing returns, requiring generous reapplication and broad-spectrum coverage, corrects the common false confidence in a high number.
The Vitamin D Trade-off and Amplifiers
Sun exposure is not purely harmful: UVB triggers the skin's production of vitamin D, so some sensible exposure has benefits, and total avoidance has its own downsides. The goal is managing exposure, not eliminating it. It also helps to know the amplifiers the raw index number hides: altitude increases UV intensity because there is less atmosphere to filter it, and reflective surfaces like snow, water, and sand bounce additional UV onto the skin, so the same index value carries more real exposure on a ski slope or a beach. Clouds reduce UV only partially, so burns happen on overcast days. These factors mean the burn-time estimate is guidance, not a guarantee.
