The Adjustable Slat: How the Venetian Blind Works

The blind solved a problem curtains could not: how to control light and privacy by degrees, with a twist of the wrist, rather than all-or-nothing. The tilting slat is a genuine piece of engineering, and the precise inside-mount measurements a blind demands come straight from the mechanics that make those slats move.

Light You Can Dial

A curtain is essentially open or closed; a slatted blind is infinitely adjustable. By tilting a stack of horizontal slats, the blind can admit full light, block it entirely, or find any setting between — and crucially, it can be angled to let light in while still denying a sightline from outside. This graduated control of light and privacy is the blind's defining advantage.

The Mechanism of the Tilt

The magic is in the ladder cords — loops of cord strung on both sides of the slats that raise one edge while lowering the other, tilting every slat in unison. A separate lift cord raises and stacks the slats to uncover the window entirely. Together these give two independent controls: tilt for light angle, lift for how much window is covered — a compact, elegant piece of mechanical design.

Why Precision Matters

Because a blind is a rigid mechanism with a headrail, brackets, and a tilting stack of slats, it must fit its opening precisely. An inside-mounted blind is deliberately ordered a touch narrower than the measured window, leaving clearance so the headrail and brackets fit and the slats can tilt and lift without binding against the frame. The small subtraction is the tolerance a moving mechanism needs.

Inside or Outside

The choice between inside and outside mount is partly about the frame's depth. An inside mount seats the blind cleanly within the window recess for a trim, built-in look, but needs enough depth to house the headrail; a shallow frame forces an outside mount, where the blind covers the opening and overlaps the surrounding wall instead.
