Green water is essentially free rainfall that a crop uses, with little competing demand. The Virtual-Water Trade
Because water is embedded in goods, trading goods is effectively trading water. When a country imports water-intensive products, it is importing the water used to make them, and effectively conserving its own water; when it exports such products, it exports its water. This global virtual-water trade moves enormous volumes of water around the planet inside crops, meat, and manufactured goods, entirely invisibly. Notably, some water-scarce countries import water-intensive foods precisely to spare their own limited water, in effect importing virtual water to cover a domestic deficit, while some water-rich regions export it. This reframes food and trade policy as, in part, water policy: a nation's true water balance includes the virtual water flowing in and out through its trade.
