The gas cylinder calculator figures out how much gas remains in a cylinder from its pressure, and it works well, but only for certain gases. For others, notably propane, the pressure gauge is famously and dangerously misleading: a propane tank can read nearly full on the gauge and then abruptly run empty. The reason is a beautiful piece of physics about the difference between gases stored as compressed gas and gases stored as a liquid. Understanding it explains why you weigh a propane tank rather than trusting its pressure.

Two Ways to Store Gas in a Cylinder

Gases can be packed into a cylinder in two fundamentally different ways. Some, like nitrogen, oxygen, or compressed air, stay as a gas even under high pressure, simply squeezed into a smaller space. Others, like propane, are compressed until they turn into a liquid, and the cylinder holds mostly liquid with a layer of gas above it. This distinction, gas versus liquid storage, is the key to why the pressure gauge means completely different things for the two cases.

Compressed Gas: Pressure Tracks Contents

For a gas that remains gaseous, the pressure is a faithful indicator of how much is left. As you draw gas out, there is less gas in the same fixed cylinder volume, so the pressure drops steadily and proportionally. A cylinder at half its full pressure holds roughly half its gas. This is exactly the relationship the calculator uses, and for nitrogen or compressed air, reading the pressure reliably tells you the remaining contents. The gauge is honest because pressure and quantity fall together.

Liquefied Gas: The Constant-Pressure Trap

Propane behaves entirely differently, and this is the trap. As long as there is liquid propane in the tank, some of it evaporates to replace any gas drawn off, keeping the gas pressure above the liquid roughly constant. So the gauge reads nearly the same whether the tank is nearly full or nearly empty of liquid, because the pressure barely changes until almost all the liquid is gone. Then, when the last of the liquid finally evaporates, the pressure suddenly plummets and the tank is empty, with little warning. The gauge stays high, then abruptly collapses.

Why You Weigh a Propane Tank

This is why the reliable way to check a propane cylinder is not to read its pressure but to weigh it. Since the tank holds mostly liquid, and liquid has substantial mass, the tank's weight changes steadily as propane is used, unlike its pressure. Weighing directly measures how much propane remains, cutting through the constant-pressure illusion. The calculator works for compressed gases where pressure honestly tracks contents, but it explicitly warns that for liquefied gases like propane, you must reach for a scale, because the pressure gauge, however reassuring, is telling you almost nothing about how much fuel is left.
