The durability of a patio is built into the layers you never see: the compacted base, the bedding, the drainage slope, and the edge restraint. The Patio Is a System of Hidden Layers

A well-built paver patio is not pavers on dirt. It is a layered assembly, each layer doing a specific job, with the visible surface merely the top of the stack.

Skimp on any lower layer and the beautiful surface on top inherits the failure. The calculator sizes the surface and the base volume; the quality of installation of those hidden layers is what the number cannot capture.

Compaction: The Step Most Failures Skip

The base must be compacted, mechanically, in layers, not just dumped and raked. Loose base material settles unevenly under foot traffic and weather, and a patio set on uncompacted base will develop dips and low spots within a season or two. Professionals compact the subgrade, then add crushed stone in shallow lifts and compact each one, because compacting a thick layer all at once leaves the bottom loose. This patient, invisible work is the difference between a patio that stays flat and one that becomes a washboard.

Drainage: Flat Is a Trap

A patio should not be truly level. It needs a slight, deliberate slope, typically a small drop over each running foot, so water runs off rather than pooling or soaking into the base. Water is the enemy of every buried layer: it softens subgrade, migrates fines, and, in cold climates, freezes and expands. A patio built dead flat, or worse sloping toward the house, traps water exactly where it does the most damage. The gentle pitch away from structures is one of the most important and most overlooked details.

Frost Heave and Edge Restraint

In climates that freeze, water in the base can freeze and expand, lifting and tilting pavers, a phenomenon called frost heave, and it is why drainage and a proper granular base matter so much in cold regions: a base that sheds water has little moisture to freeze. Separately, the edges of a paver field must be locked in place with edge restraint; without it, the outer pavers creep outward under load, the joints open, and the whole field loosens from the perimeter inward. Many patios fail not in the middle but at unrestrained edges.

Building for the Long Run
