Small Claims Court Trades a Dollar Ceiling for Speed
Small claims court exists as a faster, simpler, lower-cost alternative to standard civil litigation — often without attorneys, with relaxed procedural rules and a same-day or short-wait hearing. The tradeoff is a dollar cap: exceed the jurisdiction's limit and the case generally has to move to a standard civil court, with all the added cost and complexity that implies. This calculator does the one comparison that actually matters — claim amount against that ceiling — and reports the headroom or shortfall.
The Formula
The comparison is direct: if the claim amount is at or below the stated limit, the claim qualifies; if it exceeds the limit, the calculator reports by how much and flags that a different court, or a reduction/waiver of the excess amount, may be needed.
